The Tasmanian Government's Youth Jobs Strategy aims to improve youth engagement in employment, further education and training.

The Youth Jobs Strategy is a collaboration between the Department of State Growth (Jobs Tasmania) and the Department for Education, Children and Young People. It will be finalised in the first half of 2024.

We will continue to provide updates as the Strategy is developed. In the meantime you can browse this site to:

We have engaged extensively with communities, business and industry representatives, local, state and federal government, service providers and most importantly with young people, including:

In partnership with the Youth Network of Tasmania, convening a dedicated Youth Panel to ensure we are engaging with young Tasmanians in ways that work for them:

  • development of a youth-friendly discussion paper and creative submission process
  • delivering regional youth workshops across the state, to ensure we're engaging with a diverse range of young people
  • co-facilitating a workshop with the Premier's Youth Advisory Council
  • delivering a series of 4 workshops with community and not-for-profit organisations, business and industry, and other government stakeholders to better understand how young people navigate a pathway to work or training
  • consultations with youth service providers through the Youth Employment Alliance
  • co-facilitating 2 Regional Jobs Hub Community of Policy and Practice meetings
  • consultations with the educators including the Catholic Education Sector and Schools Leadership Forum
  • working closely with the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to ensure we are aligning our efforts and leveraging existing opportunities
  • participating in more than 200 bi-lateral discussions with individual stakeholders across government, community, business and industry, the education and training sector, and youth services sector.

We also produced a Discussion Paper (PDF 3.2 MB) to test common themes arising from stakeholder discussions and to provide an opportunity for all Tasmanians to provide feedback. The public consultation process closed for submissions on 27 October 2023.

We are also building an evidence base through new and existing research:

  • Commissioned research (PDF 1.6 MB) on the Tasmanian labour market and analysis of youth education, employment and the economic benefits of increase youth participation
  • Emergent Adulthood: Review of Literature (PDF)
  • Tasmanian Youth Story survey and report
  • Review of existing literature to learn from previous efforts in Tasmania and other jurisdictions
  • learnings from current Program evaluations including the Youth Navigators pilot and Work Based Learning Services (undertaken by Beacon Foundation)
  • data and anecdotal evidence collected through the Regional Jobs Hub Network, Youth Career Facilitator pilot and Youth connectors pilot
  • development of a Youth Employment Outcomes Framework (with Social Ventures Australia)

A public consultation process was held from 15 September to 27 October 2023. A discussion paper (PDF 3.2 MB) was produced to support this process.

Formal submissions received via email will be published when consideration of all submissions has concluded. Submissions received via feedback from will be considered as part of the consultation process but will not be published.
